History of Kundalini

The beginning

Kundalini yoga is one of the most traditional forms of yoga and has been practised for around 2500 years in different forms. Some of the pranayama (Breathwork) has been practised for around 5000 years making Kundalini one of the oldest spiritual, physical, breathing practices, meditations and philosophies in the world.

Kundalini yoga has a fascinating history. The practice stems from the lineage of Raj Yoga, which is mentioned in the Vedic texts known as the Upanishads and was practised in India since 500 BC. Its roots are also very closely tied to Tantra Yoga which will be explained in more detail.

One translation of Kundalini from Sanskrit means “Coil” / “Snake”.

5.000 years ago

Some of the first Pranayama / Breathing techniques have been practised.

The true roots of Yoga

Kundalini and its philosophical purpose is to awaken ones higher self, the divine that lies within.

Kundalini gets mentioned by name in the historical text by the Upanishads, written by a handful of unknown yogis over the course of 500 years between 1000 and 500 BC, teaching the spiritual nature of reality.

The philosophies of Hinduism, Sikhism and Buddhism trace their origins back to the Upanishads. This is where Kundalini began and found its roots.

Kundalini has been around for thousands of years and practised in the eastern regions, but few people outside the east have heard about Kundalini, never mind know anything about it or ever practised it.

There are around 2000 Kriyas and 5000 meditations which of course makes sense when you consider how long Kundalini has been around.

Yogi Bhajan brought Kundalini to North America in the 1960s, introducing this ancient wisdom to the west.
